No. 13 Texas Tech defeated No. 22 Houston 28–26 on Friday night in Lubbock, Texas, in a dramatic Big 12 opener that came down to the final play.

Houston came out fast, building a 10–0 lead early in the game. The Cougars continued to battle throughout the first half and went into halftime with a 17–14 advantage.

Texas Tech responded after the break. Running back J’Koby Williams gave the Red Raiders the lead with a 29-yard touchdown run, while Cameron Dickey later added a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 28–20.

Houston refused to go away. Quarterback Conner Weigman completed 27 of 38 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns. His 10-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Overmyer with 49 seconds remaining gave the Cougars a chance to tie the game.

Houston attempted a two-point conversion to tie the score, but Weigman was stopped just short of the goal line. Texas Tech survived with a 28–26 victory.

Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond finished 17-of-27 for 257 yards and a touchdown. The Red Raiders totaled 425 yards, while Houston finished with 458 total yards.

The victory moved Texas Tech to 3–0 overall and 1–0 in Big 12 play, while Houston dropped to 2–1 overall and 0–1 in conference play. The result also extended Texas Tech's winning streak over Houston to eight games.

It was a close contest from start to finish, with Houston taking an early lead and Texas Tech making enough second-half plays to protect its advantage. The Cougars will look to rebound in their next game against Georgia Southern, while Texas Tech returns home to face Sam Houston.
